Wins:

Janeology by Karen Harrington

I tried to win one of these in several giveaways over the past few months and never did. Then I looked around Ms. Harrington's site and found another chance to win one by answering a question or two. I was a little cheeky with my answer, but technically still correct and she gave me one! I know she might have given me an ARC if I'd asked nicely but then I'd feel pressured to get a review done and my health suffers even more when I'm under pressure. I'm really looking forward to this story. I can't imagine taking on this subject in fiction. But I see that it averages a little more than 4 stars out of five at LibraryThing. There are a lot of well known books of literature that don't score that rating on LT. So I have high hopes. It's about a mother who kills her children, that's all I know.

Thank you Ms. Harrington.

Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver

I was supposed to get The Bean Trees but this arrived. No worries, I'll read it too. I do have a copy of The Poisonwood Bible, which I got in a lot of Oprah Club books I bid for at E-bay, $40 for 23 books (including shipping)! I have yet to read Kingsolver but everyone says she's good so I'll get to it one of these days.

From Color Online. Thank you L.

Flight From the Enchanter by Iris Murdoch

Bookmooched: all the way from Texas, thank you Donna.

I now own 17 of Murdoch's novels and have read 4. I've been slowly collecting them through swapping, many are quite old but I don't mind a bit. I began reading her and liked each one. Then I discovered that Nancy Pearl of Book Lust lists all (or close to all) of Murdoch's novels as must reads. Anyone else enjoy her books? Would a post about those I've read interest anyone?

If you've reviewed any, please leave me a link.
Feel free to leave links to reviews of any book I've read, reviewed or mentioned. I'd love to read them. Questions, comments, opinions, including dissenting ones, and good reading recommendations are always welcomed.

  4. you got some lovely books in the mail. I have been dying to read Janeology, but I concur about feeling pressured to get a review done if you get it from an author.

    Happy reading

  10. You have some really interesting, exciting books on your nightstand, in your mailbox and what you just finished reading. I read Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver and I really liked it after I got into it which took me a little while but it's a pretty large book. I like the way she writes and her plots and themes are very interesting and unexpected! Hope you like her books!

  13. I absolutely adore Iris Murdoch. I was introduced to her in an honors seminar in college where we read A Severed Head. I loved it so much I went back & spent most of a year reading each book she had written in the order in which they were written. I also got to take a tutorial with the head of the honors program who loved her books & went into his office & talked about whichever one I was reading once a week.

I love A Severed Head, but I think my all-time favorite is The Sea, The Sea. It's nice to see someone else reading her, too!

  15. I'm finishing up Their Eyes Were Watching God, which I loved, even though the dialogue could be a bit difficult (it was written in a thick dialect).

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Angel's Game. I found it to be both a great story and a great play on the Gothic genre.

  16. I've read both The Bean Trees and Pigs in Heaven when I was very young and while I liked them didn't make much of an impression. I did read The Poisonwood Bible only recently, so wondering if ever I reread those two would I like them better? I loved Poisonwood and my review is here.

I've read only one Iris Murdoch, which is The Sea, The Sea, and mostly because of Nancy Pearl. I would be interested if you did reviews on her books.

  17. It looks like you ended up really enjoying The Angel's Game!

I've only read one of Iris Murdoch's novels, The Bell. After reading it, I picked up The Sea, The Sea but still haven't read it. Too many books...!
